Paying closer attention to the ultimate goal and make the train of thoughts be organized, then no matter how many tabs you open, you would not be distracted but staying focused on effectively achieving a goal. When I was working on the group presentation last week, over 50 chrome tabs were opened, but this alleged multitasking did not take my attention away from task except consuming ram memory and slowing down the computer. Whatsmore, the various sources of information covered by those tabs would allow me to be a beneficiary of the internet. Just imagine what it would be like if this occurred 30 years ago? Shifting my focus from one website to the next enabled me to acquire a rough understanding of relevant knowledge. Some people may view this process as a multitasking. Negatively, in this case, I’d rather call it task-switching. This is because first, information on those tabs partially overlapped and they all would serve one task, additionally, according to Miller, a Picower professor of neuroscience at MIT, says that for the most part, we simply can’t focus on more than one thing at a time. What we can do, he said, is shift our attention from one thing to the next with astonishing speed.
At least to start with, I did have a feeling that I was paying attention to everything simultaneously while skimming and scanning the reading materials I gathered. however, not long after that, I realized I was being under the delusion of being processing multitasks efficiently. Because that loosely-organized information system was falling apart in my mind, no solid information could be recalled and ill-established memory was being outputted.
I had to repeat the previous reading commitments but in the second try, where apps and spontaneous critical thinking were involved. As you can see from the screenshots below, I extracted every piece of information from articles and by using OneNote, grouped them in different sessions. Once I was inspired by some views of certain articles, would I immediately write down the thoughts. Afterwards, I was able to draw a mind map to connect these mind sparklings to those categorized reading materials.
In my case, I do not have an i7 brain to process multitasking information, but I believe that well-organized learning habits and the strict self-discipline can help achieve the goal. The Internet provides countless possibilities for various purposes, which means the internet empowers people with more sources to tackle with more tricky issues than ever before. The internet is not supposed to be criticized for being the culprit of turning people into scattered and superficial thinkers. Those who fail to focus the mind and sustain concentration should think over whether you lack the ability of self-discipline, for this group of people, they might be distracted by any irrelevant things. not to mention the internet.
To eliminate the distractions under the environment of online working, besides what I mentioned above —— the reasonable procedure of organizing your tasks, there are many useful productivity and focus tools or apps on the web, trying out some of these apps or techniques. Nothing works better than finishing a tough commitment and then knowing you are free to do anything you enjoy to do. Learning to control your desire and impulses while struggling to resist more interesting distractions. Become less distracted and stay focused on priority.
